We loved taking the Levens family portrait photo shoot with them recently. von Maedler Photography offers family portraits in the comfort of our clients’ own home or at a preferred  location of their choice. In this instance, Michelle and Michael thought that Shorncliffe would be a great spot to have their family portrait taken; we tend to agree!

Besides being technically comfortable with your camera, the most important thing about taking a client’s photograph is ensuring that they feel comfortable about having their image taken. I like to casually chat with everybody before the photography shoot to help generate good ideas that they might have.

With children it is important to make them feel like a photo shoot is something fun to do. At this photography session I photographed the boys individually, before the family shoot, and then got them madly running around in order to get an idea of what each of their personalities was like in front of the camera.

I also tend to ask parents and children if there is anything that they might like to bring to the shoot with them in order to feel more relaxed. Little Isaac (the blonde boy nearest to Dad) has recently taken a liking towards rubbish bins. Whilst rubbish bins may not be the most conventional prop for a family photo shoot, I think that it made Isaac much more comfortable and happier to have his photo taken.

Here are some other tips on taking some great family portrait photos.
